KAPITAN NAVI: From Local Hero to National Challenger (FMCG Rebranding)
-
Executive Summary
- Kapitan Navi is a textbook case study of a strategic rebranding that enabled a local fish producer to successfully expand nationwide. My objective was a comprehensive brand and packaging uplift designed to not only secure listings in major retail chains but also to compete head-to-head with market giants like Lisner.
-
Strategy: Engineering Shelf Impact
- In the crowded seafood category, "Brand Blocking"—creating a strong, unified visual wall on the shelf—is critical.
- Consistent Visual Code: I developed a distinctive deep-blue wave motif that unifies the entire portfolio across diverse packaging formats, from large tubs to smaller oval trays. This creates an undeniable shelf presence when products are merchandised together.
- Brand Hero Evolution: I refreshed the Captain mascot, making him a more friendly and trustworthy "guarantor of quality." He serves as the central anchor on every pack, building an emotional connection with the shopper.
-
Design System & Appetite Appeal
- In FMCG, clarity and appetizing visuals are paramount.
- Information Architecture: I designed a clear hierarchy where the flavor variant (e.g., "Herring in Cream Sauce") is instantly recognizable. Key benefits and weight are prominently displayed to facilitate quick purchasing decisions.
- Food Styling: I prioritized high-quality, realistic product visualization. The photography showcases firm fillets, rich sauces, and fresh ingredients (onions, herbs), directly stimulating appetite and driving freshness perception.
- Multiformat Consistency: The graphic system was engineered for flexibility, maintaining integrity across various packaging structures, from deep 700g tubs to flat trays.
-
The Impact: Scaling the Business
- The new design became the most powerful tool for the client's sales team.
- National Listings: The refreshed packaging successfully opened doors to national discount chains and hypermarkets.
- Competitive Edge: The brand effectively challenged category leaders, establishing a strong market position and significantly increasing the producer's market share.
